Lighting Controls Principles and Practices Webinar on August 28, 2025

On August 28, 2025, from 2-3PM ET, CONSULTING-SPECIFYING ENGINEER will host a webinar, “Lighting and Lighting Controls: Principles and Practices,” sponsored by Lutron Electronics.

The integration of effective lighting and lighting controls in nonresidential buildings is critical for enhancing functionality, safety, and energy efficiency. This session will delve into the principles and practices of lighting design and controls, with a particular focus on electrical engineers and lighting designers. Attendees will gain insights into current trends, technologies and standards shaping the industry, including relevant guidelines from the NFPA, IES, ASHRAE and energy efficiency standards.

The presenters are Anne Ullestad, LEED AP, LC, Assoc. IALD, HDR; Michael Chow, PE, CEM, CxA, LEED AP BD+C, Principal, Metro CD Engineering LLC; and Anna Steingruber, Associate Editor, Consulting-Specifying Engineer, WTWH Media. They will explore the interplay between aesthetic considerations and compliance requirements, addressing key challenges in designing effective lighting systems for diverse environments such as schools, office buildings, retail establishments and hospitals. Through practical examples and case studies, the session will illustrate best practices in optimizing light quality, minimizing energy consumption and enhancing user experience through advanced lighting control systems.

Learning Objectives:

* Understand lighting design fundamentals: Participants will gain a foundational understanding of lighting principles, including luminaire selection, lighting levels and the impact of light on human performance and well-being.
* Explore lighting control strategies: Attendees will learn about various lighting control systems, including manual, automatic and advanced control strategies and how they contribute to energy efficiency and user comfort.
* Navigate codes and standards: Participants will become familiar with relevant codes and standards, such as NFPA, IES, ASHRAE and energy efficiency standards and how to incorporate these into their lighting design projects.
* Apply best practices through case studies: The session will present real-world examples that highlight successful lighting design and control implementations, enabling participants to identify best practices and common pitfalls.
